Male Reproductive System
3
Testes Oval shaped- 2 in. long Located inside the scrotum
Male sex glands Manufacture testosterone Produce sperm
4
Seminiferous Tubules Inside testes Long series of threadlike tubules.
Approx. 1,000 tubules equal to ½ mile in length. This is where sperm are produced.
5
Sperm The male reproductive cell
Consist of a head, neck, middle piece and tail Normal sperm carry 23 chromosomes in the head. Testes produce about 500 million sperm a day. There are 400 million sperm ejaculated in an average ejaculation. A woman’s body temperature is lowest around time of ovulation to help insure sperm to live longer to reach the egg.
6
Epididymis Once sperm are produced they move to the epididymis to mature A highly coiled structure located on the backside of each testicle. 20 feet long Mature sperm are stored in the tail of the epididymis.
7
FYI’s When sperm move from the testes to the epidiymis they are completely immobile and unable to fertilize eggs. It takes about 72 days from the time sperm are produced until they become fully mature. They begin maturing in the tubules but finish in the epididymis. They travel slowly through the epididymis as a result of the rhythmic contractions and undergo”maturation” becoming capable of moving independently.
8
Scrotum Sac that hangs outside the body and holds the testes and epididymis. Keeps testes at correct temperature for sperm production * 3-4 degrees below body temperture Temperature rises, muscles in scrotum lower testes away from body, as body temp.lowers pulls towards body for warmth.
9
Penis Made up of 3 long cylinders of spongy tissue that line up parallel to the urethra. They contain a very rich supply of blood vessels and nerves. Three functions Sexual Reproduction Sexual Pleasure Elimination of body wastes. When the blood from the circulatory system fills the cylinders the penis becomes enlarged and hard, or erect. The penis is neither a muscle or a bone. Erections result entirely from blood flow.
10
Penis Glans- head of penis with many nerves endings which makes it most sensitive to touch. Foreskin- loose piece of skin that covers the glans. Males who are circumcised have less foreskin. Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin. All male babies are born with a fold of skin covering the penis. Parents choice to remove it.
11
Erections and Ejaculations
During puberty the penis becomes more sensitive and males have erections more often, at anytime and for no apparent reason. Penis size varies from male to male, most penises are the same size when they become erect. In order for semen to leave the penis it must be erect, the release is called ejaculation. Usually less than a teaspoon of semen per ejaculation but they do contain as many as million sperm. Just because a male has an erection does not mean he has to ejaculate.
12
Vas deferens 2 tubes that connect the epididymis with the urethra.
Lined with cilia to help sperm travel through tubes. Vas deferens loop over the pubic bone, around the bladder, and through the prostate gland. As it narrows it becomes the ejaculatory duct and opens to the urethra.
13
Seminal Vesicles 2 pouches above and on either side of the prostate gland. They secrete fluid that mixes with sperm and provides mobility and nourishment to the sperm. The fluid travels down the ejaculatory duct to mix with the sperm. Produces prostaglandins which stimulate female uterine contractions to move the semen up into the uterus. Fluid consists of mucous, amino acids, fructose(energy source for sperm).
14
Prostate Gland Size of a chestnut.
Donut shaped, surrounds urethra and connects the ejaculatory duct and the urethra. Secretes a milky, alkaline fluid that mixes with sperm and makes up a large portion of the semen. Largest of the glands and puts the secretions directly into the urethra. It is this solution that help protect sperm by neutralizing the acidity of the urethra and vagina in the female.
15
Cowper’s Glands Two pea sized glands located below the prostate gland that open into the urethra. These glands secrete a clear, sticky fluid that is thought to clean the urethra of the acid from the urine, thus allows a safe passage for the sperm. Some of the clear fluid is released before the semen, these droplets can contain sperm,so pregnancy can occur if there isn’t ejaculation.
