Commenting on Layout There are two approaches to commenting on layout; you should try to combine both. Word Bank Task Using the computers and a maximum of 10 minutes, find as many synonyms for the following words as you can: Organised Disorganised Messy Simple Only write down examples which could be comfortably be used to described the organisation of a magazine.

Contents Page Analysis
Find a contents page, write down anything that is used to ‘organise’ the text. Heading Why does this differ between magazines? What impression does the magazine wish to project to the audience?

Centre of visual interest (CVI)
Layout Key Words Word Meaning Pull quote A quotation set off from the text and separated. Body The main text of the work but not including the headlines. Also known as ‘copy’. Centre of visual interest (CVI) A prominent item on a page, usually a headline, picture or graphic feature. Feature A longer, more-in depth article. Kicker The first sentence or first few words of a story’s lead, set in a font size larger than the body text. White Space Areas of white space, uninterrupted by text, images etc… Text Wrap When the columns of text wrap around an image or pull quote.

Using accurate media language.
Level 4 Wide, broad range. Evidence described from the magazine – including the page it came from. Comprehensive range of examples. Detailed analysis of textual evidence from the extract. Precise and accurate use of terminology. Thorough understanding of connotative effect. Ideas expressed clearly and fluently in well structured sentences with few, if any, errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Using accurate media language. Looking at the meanings and the way the reader will interpret colour, layout, typography and language.

Connotation Connotations = what is suggested, implied meaning behind something. Layout = how a text is organised on a page. The examiner wants to know the connotations of the layout and how this is meant to effect the reader.

Step 1 Identify an element of the layout, stating the page.
The front cover is organised in a minimalist way.

Step 2 Describe the layout.
The layout is simple with a centre of visual interest (a picture of George Clooney), the masthead across the top and cover lines and sub lines organised to the last third of the page at the bottom.

Step 3 Suggest the connotations and effect on the audience.
The connotations of having such a minimal layout suggest that the magazine want to be seen as serious, professional and adult, opting to keep away from anything too busy or colourful. The focus is George Clooney and the organisation doesn’t distract from him being the focus. It suggests that the magazine is serious and they are approaching their content (George Clooney) in a serious manner also.

Analysing Layout (and all the technical elements)
Point Identify the key term. Evidence Describe the page it is located on and what it looks like. Explanation Explain the connotations of the layout and what the intended effect on the reader is.

Task Select different covers and existing magazines.
Comment on two areas of the layout, using two different pages at least. Use magazines from Google or in the classroom.
