Topic: Probability Aim: How do we find the probability of compound events? Do Now: Three-course dinners can be made from the menu shown. (a) Find the sample space for a dinner consisting of an appetizer, entree, and dessert using a tree diagram. (b) Use the Fundamental Counting Principle to find the number of outcomes in the sample space. (c) What is probability that someone chooses a salad, chicken and apple pie for their three-course dinner? Homework: Complete Handout

Let's Review: What is a Sample Space?
A sample space is the set of all the possible outcomes in a probability experiment. Note: Organized lists, tables, and tree diagrams can be used
to represent the sample space.
4
What is a Compound Event?
A compound event consists of two or more simple events. The combined action of rolling a number cube and spinning a spinner is a compound event.
5
Probabilities involving "AND"
In probability, an outcome is in event "A and B" only when the outcome is in both event A and event B. P (A and B) = P(A) P(B) Example: A die is rolled. What is the probability that the number is even and less than 4?
6
Probabilities involving "OR"
In probability, an outcome is in event "A or B" when the outcome is in either (or both) event A or event B. P (A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B) Example: A die is rolled. What is the probability that the number is even or less than 4?
