1 Science Skills Test Review
Test Thursday, September 21st

2 Putting objects in groups based on their characteristics is called…
classifying

3 Guessing the outcome of a future event is…
Predicting

4 To make an observation, you use…
Your 5 senses (sight, touch, smell, hear, taste)

5 Making a guess based on your observations (in the past or in the future)
inference

6 “The apple is red, juicy, and sweet” is an example of
observations

7 The cat is black. observation
Read each of the following statements. Decide if they are observations, predictions, or inferences? The cat is black. observation

8 I think the Buffalo Bills are going to win the Superbowl!
prediction

9 The grass is wet so I think it rained.
inference

10 I think we are going to get Science homework tonight.
prediction

11 The chocolate chip cookie feels warm and tastes sweet.
observation

12 Since the colors of the leaves are changing, I think it is Autumn.
Inference

13 Classify the following objects into three groups: pencil, sweater, fork, pen, jeans, spoon, plate, hoodie, crayon, marker Things you write with Things you eat with Things you wear pencil fork sweater pen spoon jeans crayon plate hoodie marker

14 How are observations and inferences related?
You need to make observations in order to make inferences.

15 Kayla was eating pizza with her friend when her friend said, “This pizza is really good.” Why isn’t this a good scientific observation? She did not use her 5 senses to make observations about and describe the pizza. She could say it is cheesy, hot, spicy, gooey, mouthwatering, thin, saucy, etc.

16 Look at a picture at home and practice making observations and inferences.
Remember, observations use your 5 senses and inferences are guesses based on your observations.
