3 Film Genres
2
Horror Genre “A horror film is a movie that seeks to elicit a physiological reaction, such as an elevated heartbeat, through the use of fear and shocking one’s audiences.”- A horror film’s aim is to get the pulse of the audience high. It uses techniques such as jump scares, high pitched noises, slow music and screams to send chills down the audiences back. The characters in the horror genre tend to be supernatural like demons, ghosts, artificial life and aliens. These scare the audience because there's is very little understanding of these types of characters outside of the film industry and are usually myths. Humans are naturally scared of what they cant understand. Some examples of horror films include IT, The Women In Black and The Conjuring.

Slasher Genre The Slasher genre is very similar to the horror genre. It’s aim is to thrill and scare, however, they use a mix of different techniques and techniques from the horror genre. One technique taken from the horror genre is jump scares. These are guaranteed to make the audiences heart race. A technique that is not shared with the horror genre is the mass murdering and the brutality of the murders. Horrors tend to leave deaths on a cliff hanger so the audience gets a idea what happens but doesn’t see the murder. In slasher movies the murders are seen and are often seen as the most painful ways to die. In the slasher genre the characters are normally mentally unstable and psychopaths but are human to an extent human. There is the odd exception. Examples of the slasher genre include Friday the 13th, The nightmare on elm street and Scream.

Action Genre “Action film is a subgenre of thriller film in which the protagonist or protagonists end up in a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases. Action films tend to feature a resourceful hero struggling against incredible odds, which include life-threatening situations, a villain, or a pursuit which generally concludes in victory for the hero”- The development of CGI has enabled the action genre to look more realistic in stunts and dangerous scenes that the actors cant film in real life. It also enhances the thrill as the can add more action scenes with huge special effects at lowers costs than it would be to get all the materials and shoot the scene without adding CGI. Examples of the action genre include Die Hard, The Avengers and Hot Fuzz.
