Challenges of Urbanization
Urbanization: growth of cities, mostly in the regions of the Northeast and Midwest Ghettos: sections of cities in which certain ethnic or racial groups lived Tenements: multifamily urban dwellings that were often times overcrowded and unsanitary Mass Transit: transportation system designed to move large numbers along fixed routes Social Gospel Movement: preached salvation through service to the poor Establishment of settlement houses

Reaction to Immigration
Nativism: overt favoritism toward native-board Americans Exclusion Act: passed for 10 year span ending immigration from Chinese; punishment to ship owners who brought in immigrants; made permanent in 1902 and exists until 1943
