1 WELCOME TO ENG 9 Mrs. Penkalski

2 10/3 – Welcome to English 9! Good morning! Please come in and stand around the room. I will be placing you in a seating chart for the remainder of Quarter One and all of Quarter Two. After that, and providing your behavior allows, you will chose your own seating for Quarters 3 & 4.

3 10/3 First, please copy the Objective and Homework in your agenda. If you do not have an agenda, use a sheet of notebook paper. Fold it hotdog style and record the Objective in one column and the Homework in the second. I check agendas twice per quarter! Next, please use a blue or black pen to write your complete name and period on a popsicle stick. I will be using the sticks to prompt speakers in small group and whole-group collaborative discussions.

4 10/3 Next, Please take some time to CREATE your name plate. YOU MUST WRITE YOUR NAME USING THE BLUE MARKERS. AFTER you have written your name in BLACK MARKER you may decorate it using the markers, crayons, and colored pencils laid out for you on the back table. You will have about 15 minutes to finish your name plate. I offer extra-effort points at unannounced times for those students who have their name plates displayed on their desk.

5 10/3 Finally, we will use the Determining Importance reading strategy to review the English 9 Syllabus. You will need a highlighter and something with which to write for this activity. If you do not have a highlighter, you can find one in the pencil box located under one of the desks in your quad. Your homework tonight is: 1. Secure a binder and 5 tabs 2. Get parent / guardian signatures on the following documents: Syllabus – 25 points Valued Practices Contract – 25 points Parent Signature Page – 25 points

60 “The Gulf Stream” by Winslow Homer 1899
Back in Prouts Neck, Maine, after one of his winter visits to the Bahamas, Homer painted this dramatic scene of imminent disaster. A man faces his demise on a dismasted, rudderless fishing boat, sustained by only a few stalks of sugarcane and threatened by sharks and a distant waterspout. He is oblivious to the schooner on the left horizon, which Homer later added to the canvas as a sign of hopeful rescue. Some art historians have read The Gulf Stream as symbolic, connecting it with the period’s heightened racial tensions. The painting has also been interpreted as an expression of Homer’s presumed sense of mortality and vulnerability following the death of his father. an understanding of a lifetime's experiences, deepened by adversity and intimations of mortality, laced with memories and (re)arranged by reflection, and in a language of form grown intolerant of pictorial waste and expressive digression, those subjects that were closest and meant most to him.

61 Analyzing visuals using OPTIC
Overview Write a brief overview of the image: in one or more complete sentence(s), what is this image about? Parts Notice all parts, noting important details - anything: color, figures, textures, groupings, shadings, patterns, numbers, etc. Title & Text Use the title to clarify the subject of the image. Consider both literal and metaphoric meanings. What does the title suggest? Is there any text in the image—a caption, or words in the image itself? What might this text suggest? Interrelationships Specify the interrelationships in the image. In other words, how the parts are related, both to one another and the image as a whole. Consider how the parts come together to create a mood or convey an idea or argument. Conclusion Write a conclusion paragraph about the image as a whole: think about what the artist, photographer, creator, or designer might be trying to capture and convey, and what ideas, arguments, or implications this image presents
