9 What are ‘virtues’ ? ‘Character in action’ Grown through experience
Demonstrated over time through word and deed Values vs Virtues ! Semantics Values make up the moral compass of a school, if values are the goal, virtues are the way to get there Eg a school chooses the value of Friendship….. To be a good friend you need the virtues of compassion, truthfulness, etc

10 Pupils as leaders Case Study
Developing Pupil Leadership through Character education

11 Our ‘moral purpose’ as leaders
At its heart, human flourishing requires not merely the presence or understanding of good character, but actual activity or outworking through real examples of the virtues in action….. Such flourishing will be both on an individual level, frequently outworked in personal acts of service for the common good, and on a societal level, where individuals seek to build a more effective community through their service based actions….’

12 A Christian inspiration & tradition
No single faith tradition can reasonably claim a monopoly on virtues such as honesty, humility or respect Moses – a battle against slavery Joseph – dealing with family, betrayal and ethics Ruth – perseverance, faith and wisdom Jesus’ parables teach that faithful actions not just words reveal the human character Jesus models the virtues of humility and service
