In 2016, Microsoft commissioned a 451 Research study that showed just how much customer relationships are key to service provider opportunities in the cloud. The study is available for download here: us/download/details.aspx?id=52045. Out of the many questions and answers, three in particular help illustrate the point about customer relationships. First off, 33% of IT budgets go towards hosting services. That’s one out of three, a significant figure that continues to rise. Secondly, 61% of businesses now use a hosted private cloud. If you think about this, it’s rather extraordinary that in a relevantly short period of time, the cloud has already reached two-thirds of businesses. Finally, 33% of business apps run in an off-premises cloud. As more and more companies learn to trust the cloud, they are more willing to store their information offsite. 33% of business apps run in an off-premises cloud 451 Research, Hosting and Cloud Study 2016 – The Digital Revolution, Powered by Cloud, 2016 © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. Understanding what needs to be reported
7/18/2018 8:55 PM Understanding what needs to be reported Governance issues BUT HOSTING AND CLOUD SERVICES CAN PRESENT BIG CHALLENGES Grasping hosting licensing rules Key Points: Just because people use hosted cloud services doesn’t mean they entirely understand their features or benefits. They also worry about or encounter certain challenges, which impede them from relying further on these services. Let’s talk about some of those challenges: Understanding what needs to be reported: There’s often a certain amount of confusion over what software needs to be reported and how. Governance issues: Compliance is always an issue, in some industries more than others. In general, companies don’t want to worry about compliance, meaning they want assurances that a cloud provider meets industry standards for them. Grasping hosting licensing rules: Licensing rules vary according to the services you cover. Some hosting companies find it hard separating which rules apply to them. Maintaining a high level of security: Security has always been a major concern with cloud services, not so much in performance but with concern on the customer side and a lack of trust concerning storage of corporate information. Performance and bandwidth issues: Once a company incorporates the cloud, it doesn’t want to have to deal with reliability or availability issues. They just wants everything to work, story over. Similarly, the company doesn’t want to have to worry about temporary surges in use impacting bandwidth. They also wants consistency under any circumstance. With the Microsoft Service Provider License Agreement (SPLA), you receive the only Microsoft Volume Licensing program that enables you to deploy Microsoft products for commercial hosting. To get the most out of this opportunity, you should turn to experts who know the program inside and out. At a high level, an engagement can be broken down into four phases: Planning, Data Collection, Data Analysis, and Final Presentation. Planning – The planning phase consists of gathering information from you on your infrastructure, identifying engagement goals, securing appointments and meetings, and arranging access to begin data collection and analysis. Data Collection – The data collection phase consists of the discovery and inventory of software assets using an inventory tool followed by the mapping of inventory data, usage, and license entitlements. This may include a questionnaire and interviews with key stakeholders to ensure all relevant data and information is collected to provide a full and accurate analysis of software deployments, licensing entitlements, and current management processes. Data Analysis – The data analysis phase includes the review and validation of all collected data, the identification of Microsoft license agreements, and the analysis of your long-term virtualization strategy. During this phase, ways to optimize virtual environments and licensing are explored to provide final engagement considerations and recommendations. Final Presentation – At the conclusion of the SAM Engagement your SAM Partner will present their results, recommendations, and next steps in an overview presentation along with a set of detailed reports. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation.
