What we learn in English class…
Genres of fiction and nonfiction Poetry Figurative Language Writing ~ Narrative, Descriptive, Expository, and Persuasive. There is also a weekly journal. Grammar: A unit will be taught each nine weeks as well as through the writing process. Daily Warm ups~ First Semester, we will focus on prefixes, suffixes, and Greek/Latin roots. Second semester, we will focus on vocabulary.

What you need in English class…
Highlighters Colored pencils/glue/scissors Sticky notes Three pronged folder for your weekly journal Marble composition book for notes Earbuds USB Drive (recommended)

Grades I grade class work and homework for participation and accuracy, using the check system posted. Tests Projects Literature Circles Essays Quizzes

Textbooks There are class sets of the Literature and Language books.
Home Textbooks will also be provided so the books do not have to be carried back and forth.

Library Library circulation is during English class once every two weeks. This is a great time to find something that you enjoy to read!

Library Incentives Accelerated Reader- AR points Library awards
Virginia Readers’ Choice- 6th grade = 6 books Special field trip at the end of the year.

End of Nine Weeks Assessment
At the end of each nine weeks we will participate in a Reading Assessment covering the skills learned within that nine weeks to prepare for the Reading SOL in May.

Advanced Classes Same SOL’s covered using differentiated instruction, and different reading selections. BONUS: As part of the Advanced Curriculum you will participate in a few writing contests such as the Young Author’s Contest and the Daughters of the American Revolution Contest. Laying the Foundation

Homebase INFORMATION During Homebase, students will turn in any notes they have for early dismissals or transportation changes. Students may also turn in doctor’s notes or absentee notes. This time period is great for finishing assignments, seeking help from teachers,, or reading. Tuesday folders- Please sign and return as soon as possible.

Fun Friday Every other Friday, students will have “Fun Friday.”
If a student owes work, he or she will have study hall to help them complete their assignments.

FMS Points FMS is starting a new system this year. It is a school wide system in which students may earn points for good behavior. This system will begin in September. More information will be coming soon.

Discipline Procedure FMS has moved to a School Wide Discipline Policy.
Most offences will be punished with a Silent Lunch. After 3 Silent Lunches, a student will serve an after school detention from 3:35-4:45 on Thursday afternoon.
