Pre-Calculus 1-1 Functions: Graphically, Algebraically, Numerically, and Verbally

Intro: If you pour a cup of coffee, it cools more rapidly at first, then less rapidly, finally approaching room temperature. There is one and only one temperature at any given time, so the temperature is called a _______________ of time.
3
Graphically Y Temperature X Function of Time

Algebraically

Numerically x (min) y (°C)

8
Verbally The time it takes you to get home from a football game is related to how fast you drive. Sketch a reasonable graph graph showing how this time and speed are related. Give the domain and range of the function.

Problem Set: #1) An Archer climbs a tree near the edge of a cliff, then shoots an arrow high into the air. The arrow goes up, then comes back down, going over the cliff and landing in the valley, 30 m below the top of the cliff. The arrow’s height, y, in meters above the top of the cliff depends on the the time, x, in seconds since the archer released it.
11
# 1) Function
12
1. a) What was the approximate height of the arrow at 1 s? At 5 s? How do you explain the fact that the height is negative at 5 s?
13
1. b) At what two times was the arrow at 10 m above the ground? At what time does the arrow land in the valley below the cliff?
14
1. c) How high was the archer above the ground at the top of the cliff when she released the arrow?
15
1. d) Why can you say that height is a function of time? Why is time not a function of height?
16
1. e) What is the domain of the function? What is the corresponding range?
