The Shape Method Break an image down into SHAPES. These shapes can be ALTERED to become more SPECIFIC (a curved triangle with one point cut off).

The Shape Method These shapes should be SKETCHED, with LIGHT, REPEATED LINES. The ENTIRE shape should be completed.

The Shape Method Use your pencil to measure PROPORTIONS and ANGLES. Always COMPARE the positioning of one shape to other shapes based on the same positioning in the photo.

The Shape Method And if you are having trouble….draw UPSIDE DOWN. In realism, the mind is dumb…the EYES are the truth tellers!

The Bug Method Using your shapes as a BASE, observe the EDGES of a form. Imagine a bug slowly crawling around edges, both outside and inside. As it moves, RECORD the path and each small change with your pencil.

The Bug Method Your eyes should dart back and forth BETWEEN image and paper. The pencil should move SLOWLY. Keep the eye and pencil at the SAME SPEED.

The Bug Method If your eye (the bug) stops because another edge intersects, STOP the pencil and reposition! If a line fades, FADE the pencil by REDUCING PRESSURE!

The Bug Method Remember…USE YOUR SHAPES AS A SKELETON FOR ADDING DETAIL!

The Bug Method Continue to build up DETAIL, then ERASE out unwanted lines and DARKEN those you want.

The Bug Method Remember…this is a PROCESS. Trust it.
