2 International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
Name of organisation and associated bodies International Electrotechnical Commission Description of what this organisation is addressing The IEC is the world leading organization that prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies – collectively known as “electrotechnology”. The IEC also administers three global conformity assessment systems, IECEE, IECEx and IECQ, for testing, certification and approval of equipment, systems and components to its International Standards. Who are the consumers Our members are national committees, and each NC represents its nation's electrotechnical interests in IEC management and standardization work. The IEC has 59 Full Members and 22 Associate Members. Experts in electricity and electronics participate in technical committees and do the work of preparing our standards. This includes: Manufacturers, providers, distributors and vendors Consumers and users All levels of governmental agencies Professional societies and trade associations Standards developers

Taxonomy, terms, definitions and metrics used and introduced. The International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV) is the world’s most comprehensive online electrical and electronic terminology database, containing more than 20,000 terms and definitions. The IEV is published as a set of publication in the IEC series and can be view at: Standards (certification) being proposed, developed or suggested. Current Standards. The IEC Smart Grid Standardization Roadmap a strategic, but nevertheless technically oriented, reference book which represents the standardization requirements for the IEC Smart Grid Roadmap based on the recent work of IEC SG3. As a living document, this roadmap will be subject to future changes, modifications and additions, (i.e. completion of the mapping of a Generic Reference Architecture for Smart Grid) and will be incorporated into future editions. This roadmap presents an inventory of existing (mostly IEC) standards, and puts them into perspective regarding the different Smart Grid applications. Gaps between actual standards and future requirements are analyzed and recommendations for evolution are presented. Nevertheless, different national and international groups have delivered input which, after review and discussion in SG3, has been integrated in the Roadmap. The Roadmap will be publically available on-line in June 2010.

4 International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
How does this relate to the scope of EEDC The SG3 Roadmap document is broad in its scope and parallels slightly with the scope of EEDC, however, the IEC has a dedicated Strategic Group to study the challenges of electrical energy efficiency. Strategic Group 1, Energy efficiency and renewable resources, has a clear understanding of the coverage of IEC Standards – as they relate to electrical energy efficiency and renewable energies. As a result, IEC Members have an invaluable tool to help them prioritize and guide the technical work as they see fit. is an independent community website set up by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is an online location that individuals can share ideas and thoughts about electrical energy efficiency; and where the questions of electrical energy efficiency are addressed.
