3 THE APLRS Registered on 17th January 1990 (Reg No ) under the Societies Act to: Conserve & manage all Rhino on private lands in consultation & collaboration with the KWS. Represent the private sector involved in the conservation & management of all rhino’s on private Land, Provide secure land & offer security to all rhino’s held in private Land, Fund-raise in consultation with KWS for rhino management on private land, Build capacity for rhino monitoring & security teams, Offer advise on issues relating to rhino conservation & management to members of the association, Share Logical support amongst members, Coordinate channeling of specific issues relating to rhino on private land to the National Rhino Steering Committee. APLRS comprise 8 of the 19 rhino conservation areas in Kenya Sera: Established Oct 2014 – rhino’s in May Lewa: established Borana: established Il Ngwesi: , Ol Jogi established 1980, expanded 2005, OPC: established 1988, Solio: established 1970, Chyulu: Rhino’s “rediscovered” in the mid 90’s. Oserian, Kigio, Ol Ari Nyiro & Mugie “destocked”.

4 APLRS CONSTITUTION Chairman (as elected by members),
Secretary (as elected by members), Treasurer (as elected by members), Representatives of Private Land Rhino Sanctuaries, Rhino Program Coordinator, KWS District Warden in Rhino Conservation Areas, KWS Senior Scientist – other species, Co-opted members as decided by the association. Oversee & Drive Local Area Implementation Coordinate, Synergize Strategy Implementation & Updating Major Decisions & Oversight Area Rhino Management Committees (ARMC’s) The ARMC’s have been totally ineffectual & the REC has not sat in the last strategy term. Whereas the role of the REC has been undertaken by ECOM, the APLRS acts as the primary “grass-route” advisory body to the RPC. 5 APLRS areas fall in Tsavo conservation area, northern conservation area & Mtn conservation area. Despite that Lewa doesn’t fall in Laikipia, it has merged with Borana which does & their rhino population is reported as one.

6 Kenya’s habitat sanctuaries were established in a desperate bid to prevent extinction in the poaching onslaught of the 1970’s & 1980’s. Is it coincidence that the first positive growth in decades coincided with the establishment of the APLRS in 1989?

7 INTRODUCTION TO KENYA’S RHINO’S
KENYA HAS 1149 RHINO’S (Source: National Rhino Office, 31st December 2016) THEY INCLUDE 3 SUB-SPECIES: Eastern Black Rhino (Diceros Bicornis Michaeli), 696 Southern White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum), 450 Northern White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni). 3 BR’s: Public: 49% Private: 42% County: 7% Community 3% SWR’s: Public: 22% Private: 77% County: 0% Community 1% NWR’s: Public: 0% Private: 100% County: 0% Community 0%
