What are the Undergraduate Colleges?
Six learning communities that ground the first-year at Stony Brook, based on broad academic and social themes Provide a common experience for all first-year students. Provide an integrated approach to undergraduate education Designed to support the transition from high school to college; build community; and prepare student for personal and academic success. Undergraduate College Faculty-Staff Team: Faculty Director Undergraduate College Advisor(s) Residential Quad Director Residence Hall Directors Undergraduate College Centers: Buildings/spaces affiliated with each UGC Common area for students within Colleges Classes, programs, residential students live within same quad

Orientation and Opening First-Year Seminar 101 (Fall) First-Year Seminar 102/WISE 187 Seminar/Honors Mini-Courses (Spring) Co-curricular Programs and Events Special opportunities and initiatives First-Year Reading program Undergraduate College Academies 5 interdisciplinary minors 6 certificate programs and opportunities for internships Allow students to continue UGC affiliation beyond the first year

Orientation & Opening Students celebrate the official start of their academic journey at Stony Brook. Students take the first step towards graduation: registering for fall classes Students build connections and learn about the University, including academic expectations, getting involved, and the resources available. At Opening, students will participate in activities with other students in their Undergraduate College and learn about theme.

First-Year Seminars First-Year Seminar 101 (Fall)
A one-credit introduction to the University, taught by Stony Brook professional staff/faculty First-Year Reading and co-curricular experiences are embedded in the curriculum Each FYS 101 typically has peer leader or UGC Fellow within the class, an experienced student who acts as a mentor and resource for students in their transition to college First-Year Seminar102 (Spring) A one-credit academic seminar, taught by Stony Brook faculty members Small, interactive courses based on topics of instructors’ choosing that appeal to first-year students. Emphasis on faculty-student connection (lunch, field trips) Designed to build connections between students and faculty that last

Co-Curricular Opportunities
Out-of-class activities that complement and extend the class experience. Shared, thematic programming designed to support student interests and transition. Opportunities for interaction between students, faculty, and staff at the University.

Author and novelist Henriquez’s book is a stunning novel that gives us a new definition of what it is to be an American.

First-Year Reading Program
Program goals: To provide a shared intellectual experience for all first-year students To promote participation in a scholarly community To promote critical thinking and engage students in discussions of social values and ethics To help students connect their in-class and out-of-class experiences The first-year reading is used as part of the 101 seminar coursework. Students receive the book at Orientation and are expected to begin reading it in the summer Discussions and assignments related to the book will begin right away Students have an opportunity to interact with the book author Undergraduate College Commons Day: October 19, 2016
