1 “Stephen Hawking's thesis crashed Cambridge University's website”

2 For the first time ever, influential scientist Stephen Hawking's doctoral thesis is available to the public -- if you can get the web page to load. In honor of Open Access Week, the University of Cambridge on Monday posted the 1966 PhD thesis, "Properties of Expanding Universes." Shortly after it went live, requests to view the research crashed the website. "We have had a huge response to Professor Hawking's decision to make his PhD thesis publicly available to download, with almost 60,000 downloads in less than 24 hours," spokesman Stuart Roberts said. The thesis considers the implications and consequences of the expansion of the universe. "By making my PhD thesis Open Access, I hope to inspire people around the world to look up at the stars and not down at their feet; to wonder about our place in the universe. Anyone, anywhere in the world should have free, unhindered access to not just my research, but to the research of every great and inquiring mind," he said. "Each generation stands on the shoulders of those who have gone before them, just as I did, inspired by the work of Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell and Albert Einstein."

3 In Other News Amazon will be sorting through 238 proposals from cities and regions in the United States, Canada and Mexico that are hoping to land the company's second headquarters and the investment it'll bring. Besides looking for financial incentives, Amazon had stipulated that it wanted to be near a metropolitan area with more than a million people; be able to attract top technical talent; be within 45 minutes of an international airport; have direct access to mass transit; and be able to expand that headquarters to as much as 8 million square feet in the next decade. But that didn't stop some apparent long shots from applying. A bid came from Alaska, according to Amazon, though the entire state has a population below a million.
