1 Starter: What can you see in this picture?
Tree/wall? Window or flower? Outside/inside? What we see depends on our culture.

2 LO: Can I explain the impact culture has on forming our identity?
Key Terms: Ethnocentrism, culture, status, roles All (Grade D/C): Understand that members of a society are given status’ and roles relating to the culture of their society. Can explain the different types of cultures which exist. Most (Grade ). Describe using key words the different roles and status’ within a culture. Can explain how these differ depending on culture using examples of cross-cultural studies Some (Grade ) Explain the differences between society and culture and can analyse the impact these have on individuals roles and status’. LO: Can I explain the impact culture has on forming our identity? Homework: What were they points of the ‘nacirema’ article? What did it tell us about our perceptions of culture What is culture? How is culture formed? Ask pupils what they thought of the Nacirema culture- does it appear to be better or worse than theirs? Is it strange? After feedback-reveal ethnocentrism. Pupils must write definition in book Ethnocentrism: This is when people view their own culture as ‘normal’ and believe other cultures to be strange and inferior.

4 All members of society are given a social position/ status by their culture. A status can be ASCRIBED- fixed at birth, it is inherited or biological- e.g. race and gender Or it can be ACHIEVED- individuals have control over these attained status’ through education (this is especially true in Western culture), jobs or marriage. TASK: Individually write a description of yourself in which you -State your status- can be more than one -Explain whether it has been achieved or ascribed. -If a status has been achieved-describe how you achieved it Extension: If you had been born into 100 years ago, would your definition be the same? Why?

5 In pairs, look at the pictures and write down 2-3 behaviours you associate or expect from the people in the pictures. WHY do you expect them to behave in this way?

ROLES- Society expects those of a certain status to behave in a particular way. A set of norms is imposed on an individuals’ status. Will these status’ have the same associated roles in all societies across all cultures? Discuss with your partner and then we will feedback as a class. Differentiated questioning

8 Different Types of Culture- what do these mean??
Mainly subscribed to by the powerful and wealthy (upper class). Often seen as superior to other cultures because its percieved that only people with a certain education can appreciate it. HIGH CULTURE POPULAR CULTURE CONSUMER CULTURE GLOBAL CULTURE Also known as mass culture is mainly associated with entertainment culture. E.g. cinema, newspapers, music. it is enjoyed by most people and forms a part of their leisurely activities. This is due to the increasing consumption (buying) of goods and services. Shopping is a popular past time for many people in Britain. Ask pupils what they think these mean? Feedback as class. Then give pupils definition to see whether initial ideas link up to any of the definitions. Feedback as a class. Globalization is a massive influence on how we live our lives. Indiviudals travel more, listen to music from other countries, watch Hollywood films. Our lives are made up with lots of other cultures.

Task: You will work in pairs or independently to produce an information poster on the different types of culture. Success Criteria: -Describe the culture -Give examples which show how this culture affects Britain -Can anyone be part of the culture? Why? -Use key words e.g. social norms and values, culture, roles and status Explain how the culture you have been given may differ in different societies. 11 Plenary: Pupil questioning- Ask someone in the class to define one of today’s key words. The class must decide whether the definition is correct or needs more information. Repeat until all key words have been described!

12 Homework: Write an essay to describe the society you live in. -Explain the society’s culture -is Society’s culture the same to your home culture? -Define and use key words from the last 2 lessons This is only so I can see what your essay writing skills are like so I can develop the appropriate strategies to support you! It is ESSENTIAL YOU DO THIS!!
