In the past tense, there is a subject, an auxiliary verb and a past participle. J’ai joué au football subject (Je) auxiliary verb past participle (joué) (ai)

The auxiliary verb (the helping verb) is usually “avoir” which means “to have”. Copy the following in to your books. J’AI I HAVE TU AS YOU HAVE IL / ELLE A HE/SHE HAS ONE HAS ON A WE HAVE NOUS AVONS YOU HAVE VOUS AVEZ THEY HAVE ILS / ELLES ONT

Mostly, past participles end in one of three possibilities… é i u joué = played fini = finished vendu = sold For example… So to identify a phrase in the past tense, look for a part of “avoir” and a “past participle”.
