6 Financial aid isn’t just about financial aid
Large amounts of money from taxpayers come with substantial responsibilities Not all of which appear to be related to helping students pay for college Congress uses institutional eligibility for financial aid as a way to control or rectify many seemingly unrelated issues Explain each step in more detail, focus on it being the student’s responsibility with the help of the parents.

7 Conversation with a dean
Explain each step in more detail, focus on it being the student’s responsibility with the help of the parents.

8 Conversation with a dean
Dean: This feels like the tail wagging the dog. Me: Yes, but the feds are paying for the dog food. Expand on each item to really stress the parents role in the process.

12 Academics & Financial Aid
Unofficial Withdrawals Degree Completion Departmental Scholarships Expand on each item to really stress the parents role in the process.

13 Unofficial Withdrawals
SFA is required to determine whether students completed courses or not At end of each term, review every student who did not earn any course credit Must determine: if student completed the course, but did not do academic work sufficient to pass course requirements or if student stopped attending the course

14 Unofficial Withdrawals
If we determine the student stopped attending the course: Prorate financial aid eligibility based on the percentage of the term the student completed Return money to the US Department of Education (ED) May create an open balance for the student Prevents further enrollment, degree completion Can’t get a State job

15 Unofficial Withdrawals
To make determinations about unofficial withdrawals, Proof of Course Completion Forms (PCCFs) are sent to each of those students’ faculty members In the past, those forms were sent to the students Response rate was very low Resulted in sending back a great deal more money than necessary Saved $1.5 million in 2016 over 2015, thanks to impressive faculty response

16 Degree Completion Once a student has completed the requirements for an undergraduate degree, they are no longer eligible for most types of financial aid Even if they don’t petition to graduate! Please notify SFA, encourage the student to notify SFA There are limited options for post-baccalaureate students and students doing graduate preparatory work Refer to SFA

17 Departmental Scholarships
Implementation of new process created some big delays Providing scholarship memos through SAM 3.0 earlier will minimize delays SFA planning to offer additional SAM 3.0 training in the next few weeks Non-resident tuition waivers Posting to students’ accounts occurs outside SFA Can take up to a month for processing Use departmental scholarships strategically Can timing be improved to better benefit students?

18 Contact Information Briget A. Jans Take time for questions at the end.
