Letters of Recommendation
Why they are important and what you need to know about getting a good one.
2
Why do you need one? Colleges need to know what you are like outside of just your transcript and your presentation of yourself. Scholarship committees often want to know about your dedication to the classroom and your contribution to the classroom if they are going to invest in your education. Give a sense of how you learn and who you are as a person.
3
Who to ask When did they teach you? What did they teach you?
What grade did you earn? How well do they know you? How long have they been teaching?
4
Actual Request Ask early. Give at least 2 weeks notice, if possible.
Go in person, first. Give written request, too. One recommendation per request. Attach a copy of your resume. Include a self addressed, stamped envelope for them to mail the recommendation, or any other materials the application requires or requests. Follow up with a thank you.
