1 Early European exploration

2 Christopher Columbus 1- Italian explorer who set sail in the name of Spain, to find a new all water route to Asia, for Asian spices. 2- Granted 3 ships by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. 3- October of after 3 months at sea, a member of Columbus’s crew would see land. This land that they found would be today’s Caribbean islands. Columbus would claim the land in the name of Spain. 4- Columbus is credited today, for finding the “New World”. (North and South America)

6 Conquistador Hernan Cortes
1- In 1519, Conquistador Hernan Cortes would set sail to the America’s in the name of Spain. 2- Cortes would explore the Caribbean Islands and eventually land in Mexico. He would be introduced to the Aztecs and their leader, Montezuma. 3- Montezuma would show Cortes the treasures of the Aztecs, that contained gold, silver, jewels, and diamonds. Cortes would begin a plan to conquer the Aztecs. 3- Cortes would eventually conquer the Aztecs, by imprisoning Montezuma, killing thousands of Aztecs, and destroying the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. (Present day Mexico City) 4- Cortes would rebuild the city, and name it “New Spain”. New Spain would be the start off point for all explorers who came from Spain, to explore North America. (Mexico and Texas)

12 The 3 G’s Soon after the conquest of the Aztecs, many European explorers would come seeking fame, fortune, and spreading the word of God! Historians call this “The 3 G’s” Gold Glory God

13 The 3 G’s 1- GOLD After the conquering of the Aztecs, and the building of New Spain, many explorers would come to the New World in search of Gold! It was every explorers dream to find gold, so they can return to Spain with riches beyond their dreams.

15 The 3 G’s 2- GLORY It is every explorers dream to return home from an exploration with a new discovery. Returning home with a new discovery means Glory! The idea of being famous and living forever in history books is every explorers dream!

17 The 3 G’s 3- GOD The country of Spain practiced the religion called Catholicism. (Catholic) The explorers who came from Spain also had the responsibility of spreading the word of God to the Native Indians. Catholicism played a major role in the lives of the Spanish explorer. This would be the start of the attempt to convert Native Indians into Catholicism.
