2 COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES This course provides an introduction to the basic concepts and principles of design. Through exercises it aims to develop mental and manual skills to cope with design problems, visual values for structuring and articulating two and three dimensional spatial compositions. It introduces elements of basic design: line, direction, shape, size, space interval, texture, color, movement, light, shadow, sound, the principles that help determine the definition in visual perception, foreground-background relationships, harmony, contrast, gradation, dominance, balance, unity. The main objective of this course is to enable the students to comprehend the essence of making two or three-dimensional composition and to develop a sense of order with special emphasis on the principles of organization.

4 LEARNING OUTCOMES Specific:
- Developing basic design methods and abilities. - Understanding of how observation, analysis, experiment and critique apply to design process. - Skills and judgment in communicating form, scale, arrangement, etc - Understanding of key representational conventions and techniques - Developed drawing technique Generic: - Verbal, Writing, Graphic Skills - Research & Critical Thinking Skills - Communication &Collaborative Skills

5 LEARNING STRATEGIES Lectures interactive lectures and presentations introducing new concepts and approaches to resolution of the design problem. Studio is the major practical component of the course. It requires the student to fully engage in the design problem. Readings and research intended to enhance the material of the studio and contribute additional thoughts related to concepts explored. Design journal/sketch book is required for recording field research, exploration of precedents, class material, reading notes, etc.
