2 Incredible Climate Changes in Incredible India

3 Incredible India!!! India – a vast subcontinent which boasts of over species of plants, around 500 varieties of mammals, 2000 species of birds, 30,000 types of insects and a wide variety of fish, amphibians and reptiles! A country where, in each region people speak different languages, are of different cultures and different races, yet share one bond – of being uniquely Indian. So it is no surprise that Indian weather is as unique as anything else found here. The geography and geology of India are one of a kind. The tall Himalayas in the North, the Thar Desert in the west, the plains in the east and the peninsula of the South have all helped influence India’s weather.

4 Geography of India India is a tropical country, since the Tropic of Cancer passes almost exactly through the centre of the country. In fact, India is one of the few countries that can boast of a monsoon season. The Himalayas act as a barrier for the bitterly cold katabatic winds from Central Asia, keeping North India warm in the summers and mildly cold in the winters, while the sea helps regulate temperatures in southern India. Like most tropical countries, Indian climate is unpredictable and unstable. Floods, droughts, cyclones and other natural disasters are common and they have killed or displaced millions of people. This precarious situation is being worsened by global warming.

5 So what are these changes??
India has had a fair share of floods, cyclones, droughts etc. However, over the last few years there has been a dramatic increase in the numbers. Over the last two years alone, nearly 2.8 million people have died due to natural disasters. Everyone remembers the catastrophic cyclone that hit Orissa in It caused damage worth 3.7 Billion $. Another example is the storm that rocked Mumbai in 2004, where 36 cms of rain was experienced within 24 hrs, the highest ever recorded in India. While some places have been experiencing abnormally high amounts of rain, other places like the Thar Desert have been experiencing a drought. Millions of people have been killed or displaced due to these droughts.

6 JUST A GLIMPSE

7 INDIAN CLIMATE CONTINUED
India experiences typically hot tropical summers. Over the last few years, Indian summers have been scorching in their intensity. In 2004, a heatwave swept over India, and the toll rose to over 32,000 deaths. Scientists predict that temperatures are likely to increase by 2 or 3 degrees a year. This not only means that India is going to become hotter, but it is also going to become wetter. The increase could have serious consequences on crop growth and weather patterns, given that India's temperature has risen by only 0.4 to 0.6 °C over the past century. A 10 per cent increase in monsoon rainfall is predicted over the next century.

8 DISMAL PICTURE OF MOTHER EARTH

9 NATURE BEING DECEPTIVE?
An alarming and clearly visible sign of global warming is that mango trees are suddenly flowering in mid winter – perhaps a harbinger of worse to come?! It is time everyone wakes up to the harsh reality of global warming. It is time people sit up and realize that global warming is affecting us personally.

10 SHOCKING TRUTHS ABOUT THE MELTING GLACIERS OF THE HIMALAYAS.

11 ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

12 THINK & ACT A few questions for you to ponder
What causes climatic change? Who is responsible for it? Is it possible to stall it? Is it a reversible change? Contribute your views for saving Mother Earth from inclement weather.
