How can people respond during an earthquake?
Go under reinforced doorways
Seek shelter under strong tables
Move away from windows
Do not go outside
How can people respond straight after an earthquake?
Turn heaters off
Disconnect electricity
Fill bath with water

4. Emergency response after an earthquake (days)
If earthquake is life-threatening a Civil Defence emergency will be declared
When it is safe enough, emergency services will:
Put out fires
Search for/ rescue survivors (Search and Rescue teams may be called in)
Treat the injured

5. Temporary hospitals and evacuation centres may be set up
All economic activity stops in evacuated area

6. Clean-up and assessment (weeks)
Government assesses damage to decide on emergency assistance
Weakened buildings are demolished and rubble removed
Infrastructure/ essential services are restored as quickly as possible

7. Repair (months)
Evacuees return home (if allowed)
Insurance claims are made
Businesses reopen or close down permanently
Major repairs and rebuilding begins
More services are restored
People may seek counselling

8. Recovery (years)
Major infrastructure damage may take years to repair e.g motorways, dams
Disaster plans and procedures are evaluated and revised
