1 Piecewise-Defined Functions
Unit 3

2 Monday Oct 9 –MAFS. Notebook- paper-colored pencils – scissors parent functions paper
Warm up – Review packet for test question # 12

3 Piecewise – defined functions
Made up of different functions – use your parent functions paper to help you identify the pieces – described as linear and non- linear(curves) They have restricted domains for each piece for example In general linear functions in the y = mx + b form have a domain Of ALL REAL NUMBERS – however in this piecewise defined Function that is comprised of 2 linear functions( and a cubic function of 2 parabolas their domain have been restricted 𝑦 = 𝑥 where x < -2 and 𝑦 = 1/3𝑥 + 7/3 where x > 2 Both open circle so only < or > . There are intervals where the function is increasing /decreasing The function can be discrete (not connected ) or continuous (all connected) Written by giving the function followed by the restricted domain

4 October 10 WARM-UP MUST complete #11 1. find slope 2
October 10 WARM-UP MUST complete #11 1. find slope 2. use perpendicular to write equation 3. use systems

5 October 11 Notebook- paper- pencil – colored pencils On graph paper graph 𝑦 = 3𝑥 −2 𝑦 = 3 𝑦 = 𝑥 2

6 Oct 12/13 Graph BHS – use restrictions

7 October 17 Supplies – notebook- paper – pencil You can sit anywhere- No cell phone – productive classwork Warm- up - Explain what makes a continuous piecewise function. Practice piecewise functions and graphing

8 Wednesday October 18 Supplies – notebook- paper- pencil – colored pencils No cell phones – backpacks against wall- work bell to bell  Warm- up check homework graphing turn in 1.find 𝑓 −1 𝑥 a. 𝑓(𝑥) = 1 7𝑥 b. 𝑓(𝑥)= 3𝑥 given f(x) = 2x and g(x) = - x find: a. fg(x) b. fg(2) c. ff(4) d. gf(1)

9 More practice graphing Label each of the transformation aspects that will help you to sketch a graph quickly More CORNELL NOTES on piecewise functions Check for understanding (essential question?) How can we write and graph a piecewise function to represent the real world situation of ordering t- shirts?

11 Thursday October 19 supplies- notebook- notes from yesterday – paper- pencil (colored pencils) ****PAPER to turn in from scavenger hunt check 1 and 2 from your graphing homework Warm – up - how many pieces? what types of functions? What is the domain for the increasing interval? Evaluate a. 𝑓 𝑏. 𝑓 − 𝑐. 𝑓 𝑑. 𝑓 6 Today – warm up - finish “notes” from yesterday - Piecewise “scavenger hunt” - at 10:30 AM QUIZ piecewise Office hours TOMORROW for whatever you did not finish.

12 October 23 Monday Supplies: notebook- notes- paper- pencil Warm- up – (x3 + x2  14x  27) ÷ (x + 3) use synthetic division (x2 + 8) ÷ (x  4) you can choose either long or synthetic division ***review piecewise functions – complete the CW for HW if necessary – TEST THURSDAY
