Parliament Dissolved Again!
Charles I did not respect the “Petition of Right” and dissolved the Parliament the next year! Parliament was not called for another eleven years! During this time Charles I ruled as he wished

Charles and the Church Like his father Charles supported the Church of England. He… Persecuted the Puritans (Especially after one assassinated George, Duke of Buckingham) Tried to force the Scots to use the Church of England’s prayer book The Scots refused and rebelled

The Scots Invade! In 1640 the Scots invade England. Charles, in dire need of money to defend England, is forced to call Parliament

It is known as the Short Parliament The Irish Rebel and…
Charles I calls Parliament which complains so…he dissolves after only three weeks It is known as the Short Parliament The Irish Rebel and… A few months later, desperate for funds, he calls it again. This one lasted 20 years and was known as the Long Parliament Parliament tries to limit Charles’ power. 1642 Charles tries to arrest the leaders of Parliament, so Parliament raises its own army…and it’s….WAR!

Civil War It was the Cavaliers, or Royalists who support King and Church of England Against Parliament’s army of reformers known as “Roundheads” Parliament made Oliver Cromwell the leader of its army, he was a brilliant general and a very religious man. It took five years but in 1647 Charles surrenders, is tried and executed (1649)!

A Nation-State The sentencing of Charles I to be executed for treason
is only possible if one assumes that England is a nation-state against which he can commit treason! And not just his kingdom!
