Dennis, PhD, RN, FAAN - Professor School of Nursing, University of Central Florida Orlando, FL BACKGROUND & SIGNIFICANCE The incidence of childhood obesity has been increasing over the past 30 years Consequences Affect Society: Physically Mentally Financially Possible Causes: Genetics Cannot alone explain rapid increase Diet No change in overall energy intake since the 1970’s Decreased physical activity A decrease of only 15 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity can lead to obesity FINDINGS Measures (number of studies): BMI (7) Oxygen consumption (6) Physical fitness (6) Mile-run, shuttle run, strength, flexibility, exercise duration, sit-ups, pull-ups Body composition (6) Body fat percentage, skinfolds, waist circumference Healthy behavior (5) Physical activity, diet Blood pressure, heart rate (4) Blood tests (3) Cholesterol, glucose, insulin Cardiovascular knowledge (2) Significant improvements between groups pre-post intervention (number of studies) BMI (1 – only in males) Oxygen consumption (5) Physical fitness (5) Body composition (4) Healthy behavior (2) Knowledge (2) CONCLUSIONS Improving physical education programs with a focus upon fitness, physical activity, and healthy behaviors can significantly improve fitness and body-weight measures in children. PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of school-based physical education class interventions on measures of physical fitness and body weight.
