Ludwig Van Beethoven

Childhood Beethoven grew up in Bonn, Germany, in a very unhappy home. He was forced to practice the piano by his father, who would punish him when he made mistakes. He held his first concert at age 8. He was eventually known as the greatest pianist of his time.

The Early Years After awhile, even though he was still only a boy, he started traveling far and wide to perform. At age twelve he was supporting his family by playing the organ and composing music. Ludwig studied with famous composers like Hadyn and it was rumored that he met and studied with Mozart. He was known as a very serious boy, especially when it came to music.

Favorites One of Beethoven's favorite foods was macaroni and cheese. He also loved strong coffee - exactly 60 coffee beans to one cup.

Musical Genius Beethoven was musical genius, but writing music did not come easy. He was constantly changing the music he wrote. It got even harder for him when he started going deaf at the age of 30. Beethoven’s fifth

Hearing Impaired Although Beethoven gradually lost his hearing, he composed many of the most famous musical works of all time, such as his ninth symphony, after he had become totally deaf. He cut the legs off of his pianos and played them on the floor so he could feel the vibrations.

Peculiar Personality Beethoven had a peculiar personality. He worked hard and very long hours writing his music. His hearing difficulties caused him great emotional distress. He would yell and shout at people out of frustration. He also appeared ‘wild’ in appearance. His hair would frizz and stand on end!

Thank You Mr. Beethoven We have so many beautiful pieces of music because of Beethoven’s talents. Many famous composers looked up to him and did their best to be as good as him. Music owes a great deal to Ludwig Van Beethoven! Let’s listen to a bit of his ninth symphony- that he composed when he was completely deaf!
