How not to deliver first aid!
Watch the clip from Mr Bean to introduce students to the concept of first aid and responding to accidents and emergencies. Ask students at this point why they think it is important to learn about first aid.

First Aid Learning Objective: To explore how to respond to accidents and keep yourself safe. I can identify the order in which to respond to an accident. I can explore how to respond to different first aid situations. I can apply my understanding of first aid to different scenarios. Explain to students were are going to look into how to respond to accidents and emergencies using advise and materials from the Red Cross.

Treat Me Ask for a volunteer to operate the mouse for the scenarios (bleeding, choking & broken bone). Read out the four actions and ask the pupils to respond by a show of hands or by writing down in their books what they think is the correct order before holding a class vote and trying the majority’s choice on the screen. The volunteer operating the mouse then drags the majority’s choice into place; the action will stay in place if correct, or it will spring back if wrong. Do the same for the remainder of the actions. Keep asking for suggestions until the order is confirmed. Pupils to work through activities on helping someone who is bleeding, choking, or has broken bones.

First Aid Learning Objective: To explore how to respond to accidents and keep yourself safe. I can identify the order in which to respond to an accident. I can explore how to respond to different first aid situations. I can apply my understanding of first aid to different scenarios. Explain to students were are going to look into how to respond to accidents and emergencies using advise from the Red Cross.

How to… We are going to watch 5 videos on how to respond in different first aid situations. After each video see if you can write down 3 important things to remember if you are faced with this situation. Watch all videos except the burn one as they saw something similar last lesson. Each video is about 1 minute long. Take brief feedback after video on the three important things they noticed.

Scenarios Divide students into groups and give each one a different scenario. Get them to write it in their books so they can remember it.

How would you feel if you were in this situation?
Scenarios What would you do? Why? How would you feel if you were in this situation? How would you stay calm? Give students minutes to answer the 4 questions – what would they do, why, how would they feel, how would they stay calm. If students finish early give them the extension task of writing down what they would say to the 999 operator. Take feedback from each group about what their responses would be.

Responses Scenario 1: check for breathing; put the person on their side with their head tilted back (recovery position). Scenario 2: apply pressure to the cut. Scenario 3: hit the person on the back and check his mouth (repeat if necessary up to five times). Scenario 4: talk to the person to see if they are responsive. If they don’t respond to you, check for breathing; put the person on their side with their head tilted back (recovery position). Scenario 5: keep the arm still and support it. Scenario 6: put her burnt fingers under the cold tap for at least ten minutes. Show students the responses to each scenario to check they are correct.

Responses Discuss the three questions as a class. Dangerous for someone giving first aid help: Card 1 is especially unsafe because of the danger of approaching traffic. Remind pupils that they must keep themselves safe at all times. Card 2 might also be dangerous, due to broken glass and the risk of fire or sharp metal. Safety is an issue in Card 6 too: children should take care when handling hot hair straighteners. If you have time ask students to work in pairs and role play phoning the 999 operator. Some might like to perform them to the class. What would you say to the 999 operator in each scenario? Did you recognise that all of these situations were emergencies and require 999? Which scenarios are dangerous for the person giving first aid?
