2 Les HLM (Habitation à Loyer Modéré) p.182
Established in 1894, Les HLM (Habitation à Loyer Modéré = subsidized housing) is a system of public apartment buildings with cheap rent apartments. The construction of these apartment buildings is limited and only 1 French person in 5 can benefit from this type of lodging. It is the most undeprivileged folks, often immigrants or people with large families, who live here. Students can also benefit from the advantages of living in HLM. Previously only found in the suburbs, since 1981 HLM have been built in downtown areas among other apartment buildings where a different population lives in order to integrate the residents to the neighborhood population. Today there is greater pressure on the government to build more HLM apartment buildings

3 Les Allocations Familiales (= Welfare system) p.182
Any person residing in France who is parent to two children, whether they are French or not, can benefit from family welfare. The family receives a sum of money from the State to help with expenses linked to food, clothing and lodging. Fanily welfare is a supplementary revenue given to all “large families” whatever their income. In the same way, French families benefit from a tax reduction which increases with each child. After the 3rd child, the mother or father can take advantage of parental time off work, without loss of salary, for a year. As for women who have raised at least three children with officially working, they have access to a retirement income because raising kids is also considered a full-time job.

Traditional houses in Sénégal: Traditionally, the Senegalese live in small communes made up a group of huts or houses. The style of these huts differs sometimes according to the ethnicity but especially due to the geography of the area. The “bambara” hut is the most typical, not only in Sénégal but in all Africa, it is a circular structure with a thatch roof
