Today’s objectives: By the end of class, students will be able to: 1. Discover how the New Deal reformed Labor Relations 2. Find out how Social Security began 3. Identify the main arguments for and against the New Deal

3 Social security In 1935 FDR stated, “Those suffering hardship from no fault of their own have a right to call upon the government for aid.” FDR followed these words up by signing the Social Security Act in 1935 The Social Security Act included a pension for the retired. It guaranteed a pension to people who were retired In order to fund this pension, a payroll tax was instituted. A Payroll Tax is a tax that removes money directly from workers’ paychecks.

4 Labor reforms Congress passed the Labor Relations Act
It later became known as the Wagner Act after the New York senator who sponsored it. The Wagner Act helped establish collective bargaining Collective bargaining is the right of a union to negotiate wages and benefits for all of its members. The AFL and CIO are created. These two organizations helped protect workers rights. AFL= American Federation of Labor CIO= Congress of Industrial Organizations

5 Pros and cons of the new deal
It employed millions of jobless people Ended the banking crisis Reformed the Stock Market Improved Working Conditions Cons- Threatened individual freedom Gave too much power to the Federal Government Concerns over a massive increase in the national debt Reliance on deficit spending Deficit Spending is a situation in which the government spends more money than it receives in taxes. So….. What would officially end the Great Depression???????????
