3. Who Rules Britain? The Queen? The Police? The Government? The Army?

4. We have a system of government called
democracy.
Democracy means 'rule by the people‘. It
comes from the Greek words dêmos, which
means people, and krátos which means rule
or strength.
This is because the idea of democracy
developed in Greece in about 507BC.

5. How Can Everybody Rule?
It would be chaos!

6. We hold an election to choose someone to represent us.

7. Most candidates who ‘stand’ for election belong to a political party.
Together people who belong to the party agree on the changes they will make if they are elected. These are called policies.

Every citizen should listen to the views of the different parties and candidates, and then make his or her own decision on whom to support.

We should make sure we share the money out fairly between everyone
We would make sure all children have a nice home and kind parents
We would make sure all families have a car
We would make sure everyone does their fair share of the work in the country

10. The caring party
We would change the law so that people who are nasty to others get in trouble with the police
We would make sure everyone in the country has a nice home to live in
We would make sure everyone gets to go on a nice holiday every year
We would make sure all animals have a good home with kind owners

11. The crazy party
We would make a law to say they children should be able to stay up as long as they like
We would make it the law to have more holidays from school
We would change the law so that children could drive real cars
We would let people have parties every day and not go to work
