THERMAL ENGINEERING SYSTEMS
Presented by Dada O.M. (B.Eng., M.Sc. Unilag) Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. October 2013
2
Introduction Thermal Engineering form an important application of thermodynamics. The commonly used systems are: Internal combustion engines Steam turbine power plant Heat Exchangers Refrigerators
3
Internal Combustion Engines
Internal combustion Engines are those engines in which the combustion of fuel takes place inside the engine cylinder. These are petrol, diesel and gas engines. The combustion of fuel in IC engines is by a spark and produces very high temperature.
4
Classification of IC engines
Type of fuel used: petrol engine, diesel engine or oil engines, gas engines. Method of igniting the fuel : Spark ignition engines, compression ignition engines, hot spot ignition engines Number of strokes per cycle: Four stroke cycle engine, two stroke cycle engine. Cycle of operation: Otto cycle, Diesel engine, Dual combustion cycle. Speed of the engine: Slow speed engine, medium speed engine, high speed engine. Cooling System: Air cooled engine, water cooled engine, evaporative cooling engine. Method of fuel injection: Carburetor engines, Air injection engines, solid injection engines.
5
Classification of IC engines
Number of cylinders: Single cylinders engines and Multi cylinder engines. Arrangement of cylinders: Vertical engines, Horizontal engines, Radial engines, In-line multi cylinder engines, V-type multi cylinder engines, opposite cylinders engine and opposite piston engines. Valve mechanism: Overhead valve engines, side valve engines. Method of Governing: Hit and miss governed engines, Qualitatively and Quantitatively governed engines
