What are Chemical Reactions?
Daily your body is going through chemical reactions. Chemical Reactions are processes that change one chemical into another. Example: Carbon dioxide is in your blood and needs to be removed so it reacts with water to form carbonic acid CO2 + H2O H2CO3
4
How do Chemical Reactions occur?
Chemical reactions need E (energy) to break down chemicals. Sometimes important reactions happen too slowly and need more E (energy) to go faster Example: If there’s not enough E to get rid of carbon dioxide in your blood you can die CO2 + H2O H2CO3
5
How do Enzymes help chemical reactions?
Enzymes can be named after what they catalyze (break down) To get this slow reaction to happen faster we need an enzyme Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions The enzyme reduces the amount of energy needed! Enzymes end in -ase CO2 + H2O H2CO3
6
What Enzymes help your body achieve homeostasis (normal conditions)?
Carbonic Anhydrase Makes Carbonic Acid to remove CO2 from your blood Amylase Helps digest carbohydrates in your salvia 1. Catalase: Helps breakdown hydrogen peroxide usable into H2O & O2 2. Lactase: Helps breakdown Lactose into monosaccharides in your small intestines
7
What can temperature do to Enzymes?
If conditions are not optimal (perfect) enzymes will stop working! Example: The optimal temperature for catalase is 370C What will happen if the temp decreases to 10? Enzyme Activity Temperature 0C
8
What can pH do to Enzymes?
If conditions are not optimal (perfect) the enzyme can denature (be destroyed)! Example: The optimal pH for lactase is 6 What will happen if the pH increases to 10? Enzyme Activity pH
9
Enzymes Qs and right of Anti-Guide
Turn over your anticipation guide and answer the questions at your seats (work with a partner next to you if you need help) When you are done complete the right hand side of your anticipation guide and put it in the turn in bin. Pick up a Science Fair Packet, so we can discuss what our class will be doing for the science fair and the important DATES!!
