John Smith, in Parenting Magazine, suggests that good parenting takes a lot of patience. Parents should not act violently against this children, and should listen to their problems. Only by listening and spending time with their children can parents effectively raise them. Smith also suggests that parents and children have a common activity they can share. When parents and children share activities they create a common bond.

When Lord Capulet strikes Juliet in Act III, scene V, he shows indications of poor parenting. Smith suggests that violence against a teen makes the situation worse. Yet Capulet hits Juliet because he is angry. By losing his temper Capulet creates a barrier of communication between himself and his daughter. If Capulet would talk to Juliet he would learn she was already married to Romeo and could not marry Paris.
