Mission and Purpose To encourage and recognize excellence in the electrical and computer engineering fields Enable student members to develop lifelong skills that prepare them for prominent positions in industry and academia Recognize professional leaders, exceptional educators, outstanding students, young ECE professionals, outstanding chapters, and effective advisors

What is HKN? Who Is Qualified For Membership? History Founded on Oct. 8, 1904 by Maurice L. Carr, an EE student at the University of Illinois, and nine other students Most important qualification originally was the character and attitude of student candidates Scholarship soon became the primary requirement, with character and other personal attributes secondary

History (continued) 1906: HKN’s first publication, “The Electrical Field” devoted almost entirely to the subject of employment 1947: Mandatory qualifications set to top 25% of Junior class and top 33% of Senior class Wheatstone Bridge symbol was selected as the emblem of HKN 1959: Induction ceremonies become open to friends and family

History (continued) “The Electrical Field” is still published twice a year, now known as “The Bridge” In the last decade, HKN included has focused not only on EE but also on CE HKN now has 200 university chapters and over 200,000 members UTA Epsilon Mu Chapter founded April 30, 1966

England: Former Deputy Secretary of Defense Eric Schmidt: CEO Google Amar Bose: Inventor of the Bose Speakers Sabeer Bhatia: Founder of Hotmail David Filo: Founder of Yahoo! Henry Samueli: Founder of Broadcom Paul and Irwin Jacobs: Founder of Qualcomm Academic Accomplishment: Ensure that your exceptional academic accomplishment and strong character is publicly recognized by the entire ECE industry. Networking Opportunities: Gain numerous networking opportunities by joining an organization that has members in leading roles with corporations, government and universities. Access to Key Positions: Possess greater access to key positions and rapid career advancement as all of these organizations actively seek HKN members. Long-term Relationships: Build a network of long-term relationships that will aid your career with HKN students who will become your friends and professional colleagues. Receive Advice: Know most of your department's faculty members on a personal level and interact with them on HKN projects as well as receive advice on your future. Résumé Enhancer: Use your HKN membership as a résumé enhancer when seeking a position or applying for graduate school. Employers prefer to hire HKN members with their leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Helping: Receive opportunities to help the ECE Department, fellow students, and the community in chapter activities. HKN Activities: Participate in HKN activities, which enable development of vital professional skills such as leadership, communications, and teamwork through practical hands-on experience. "HKN Only" Opportunities: Access opportunities that exist purely for HKN Members to broaden knowledge, increase understanding and perfect professional skills through HKN Student Chapter Projects. Leadership Skills: Develop leadership skills to prepare for high track professional career

Action Items Who Is Qualified For Membership? To join, eligible candidates must Participate in Community Service October 6, 13, 20 or 3 November are possible dates this will be held on (I will out more information soon) Turn in information form with $100 lifetime fee Obtain 1 letter of recommendation from an EE or CE faculty member by October 15th Complete signature list by October 15th Turn this all into the HKN office! . . .

To join, eligible candidates must (continued) Complete signature list HKN officers and faculty advisor - 5 points EE Faculty - 3 points HKN candidates & members - 2 points UTA students - 1point Candidates have to get a total of 50 points as requirements. . . .

Action Items Who Is Qualified For Membership? To join, eligible candidates must (continued) Submit information sheet with $100, which covers lifetime membership fee and cost of initiation dinner (Plus $10 for each additional guest) Submit all of above by October 15th Attend initiation ceremony on November 16th to celebrate your accomplishments
