5 The Treaties of Velasco
Signed May 15, 1836 2 treaties: 1 public (Velasco) and 1 secret

6 Public Treaty 1. The war between Texas and Mexico was over and Texas was declared independent. 2. Santa Anna would not take up arms against Texas. 3. All Mexican forces would withdraw beyond the Rio Grande. 4. Prisoners would be exchanged. 5. The Mexicans would return all captured property. 6. Texas leaders would promptly return Santa Anna to Mexico.

Santa Anna would push for Texas recognition and the Rio Grande River as the border.

Under the Constitution of 1836, Texans would elect their president and representatives.

11 Stephen F. Austin is buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas. Austin's original gravesite was at the Gulf Prairie Cemetery at Peach Point, in Brazoria County, Texas, and his reburial took place at the Texas State Cemetery on October 20, The gravesite is located in the Republic Hill Section of the cemetery; Section 1 Row L Number 20. The headstone for Stephen F. Austin has the following text: Stephen Fuller Austin "The Father of Texas" was born in Wythe County, Virginia November 3, 1793 and died in Brazoria County, Texas December 27, Wise, Gentle, Courageous, and Patient He was the founder of a mighty commonwealth

Born into slavery in Kentucky but was later freed by his white father 1831: settled in SFA’s colony Fought and was wounded in Texas Revolution 1837: sent petition to Congress asking for permission to stay in Texas. Some of the most respected men in the Republic signed petition.
