4 How does the DFG provide funding?
The DFG promotes projects by providing staff funding funding for direct project costs and consumables travel allowances instrumentation funding funding for other items such as publications trial-related expenses PR activities Something for everyone!* *if a good scientist!

5 What individual grants programmes does the DFG offer?
Research grants Purpose To carry out a thematically defined research project within a specific time frame Eligibility Researchers from all disciplines at German research institutions who have completed their scientific training (in most cases by achieving their doctorates) Duration Project-specific (usually several years)

6 What individual grant programmes does the DFG offer?
Temporary positions for principal investigators Purpose To carry out an individual project in the researcher’s chosen research environment Eligibility Researchers from all disciplines who have completed their doctorates Duration Three years initially

7 What coordinated programmes does the DFG offer?
Research Units Purpose To provide researchers with the opportunity to work jointly on a particular research task in order to achieve results that go beyond what can be achieved through individual research Eligibility Researchers from all disciplines at German research institutions who have completed their scientific training Duration Usually six years, maximum of eight years

9 How does the decision-making process work?
Individual grants involve reviewers, a review board & the Joint Committee Reviewers act in an honorary capacity. Approx. 22,000 written reviews annually, received from approx reviewers. 48 Review Boards (sub-disciplins), more than 700 members elected for four years 39 scientists & 32 governments’ representatives

Cooperation between scientific communities and committee members 39 senators

11 What are the DFG's funding criteria?
DFG reviewers evaluate proposals based on projects’ scientific merit applicants’ qualifications goals and work programme employment opportunities proposed use of funding quality and added value of the cooperation

12 How are reviewers and review panel members selected?
By the DFG’s Head Office
