Agenda Notes Each of these ideas was implemented using PL/SQL packages within a Banner database. Access is granted within Iframe portlets on sub-tabs We have used these for all roles within the campus Accepted Student Deposited Student Student Continuing Ed Student Grad Student Parent Faculty Staff Alumni Average development time: ??

Most of these ideas have been added as sub-pages as show below.

Works the same as Grades.
Parents/Students Allows a parent to see what rights their child has granted to them. If they have more than one child at the college then it also allows them to select which child they wish to see. The "selected" child is then stored as their "default child" within Banner to be used by other portlets. Allows a parent (or the student) to view their schedule (or their linked child's schedule). Defaults to the current term and also provides an option to view prior term schedules. The parents cannot see the schedules unless the student has explicitly granted them access. Allows a parent (or the student) to view their grades (or their linked child's grades). Defaults to the current term and also provides an option to view prior term grades. This will not display if the student has holds that prevent them from viewing grades. The parents cannot see grades unless the student has explicitly granted them access. Works the same as Grades. Displays all current transactions for the bill plus any prior balance or credit. Discounts for pending financial aid. Allows the user to pay on-line if there is an outstanding balance. If paying on-line, they are redirected to a web page filled in with all appropriate data. They simply add the credit card number or check number.
6
Parents/Students Students can use this to display all the parents, guardians, etc., that are linked to them within Banner. We collect most of this data during the application phase and store it in Banner. When a student is accepted, we link their parent/guardian information to their record. They will have a grid, showing each linked person and listed the various permissions that can be granted, View Schedule, View Grades, View Invoice, View Financial Aid Data. The defaults are all set to NO for everyone. The student can selectively grant each individual whatever permissions he/she desires. This restricts what the parents can see when they log into the portal.

Employees Allows an employee to enter a request for the Copy Center. Many default values are populated on the form including name, department, and budget information for charge backs. The user enters the information about the copies, the total charges are calculated and displayed. They are sent an confirmation of the order and if applicable, they can reply to the adding the document to be copied an attachment. The entire form has already been forwarded to the copy center as the written instructions for the copies.
10
Employees Very similar to the Copy Requests except that it is used for supply orders. Multiple lines can be added dynamically to the form allowing the user to enter as many items as they wish. Form is forwarded to the copy center, once again including all the required information for filling, delivering and charge backs to the department.
11
Students This is a custom version of the invoice allowing students to view and if applicable – pay their bill.
12
Employees Allows an employee to create their own alias. The information is stored in Banner to allows us to validate that the name selected has never been used before. Once saved, another process runs nightly to upload all aliases into an server that will allow messages to that address to be forwarded to the appropriate account.
13
Students/CE/Grad Allows the student to view the financial aid information for a selected aid year so that they can fill out the required government forms themselves.
14
Accepts/Deposits/Students/CE/Grad/Staff/Faculty
Allows the user to enter alternate addresses, phone numbers, etc., which are saved within Banner and are automatically updated to our emergency notification system each night. This gives everyone the ability to manage their own emergency notifications at any time.
15
Students/CE/Grad We setup Gmail accounts with an initial unchangeable password that is used to sync with handheld devices. Since that password is their originally assigned portal password, they rarely recall it when they try to establish their hand-held link. We store their initial password within Banner to allow this portlet to display it when needed.
16
Resident Students We have all combination mailboxes, which are typically assigned to a student for their entire time at the college. We never tell them their combination. All mailbox numbers and combinations are stored in a table within Banner. Mailbox assignments are also stored within Banner. So, it's simply a display option to allow them to view their combination via the portal.
17
Resident Students We assign pin numbers to grant access to each resident student's voic . Each student is assigned a single voice mailbox for their entire time on campus. As they change residence halls, the voice mailbox follows them and is linked automatically to the v-tree associated with that room's telephone number. Since they don't frequently connect to their voic system, they often forget the PIN.
18
Students We store each student's religious preference in Banner. This allows the student to change it via a portlet whenever they wish. In addition, this will result in them being assigned to a different "Group" within the portal which will provide them with "Announcements" associated with the religious preference that they have chosen.
19
Resident Students Very useful for new students, this provides whatever non-confidential information that their roommates have allowed us to include. Typically it will be home address and phone number. This is heavily used early on for new students to communicate about what to bring to the residence halls.
20
Employees This is a search portlet that allows faculty and staff to lookup any phone number, person, department or room by simply entering what they want. They can easily find a student's contact information, numbers for people working in various departments, etc. This has eliminated any need for telephone directories. Since all the information is stored in Banner, it's a simple lookup and is much more accurate than any word or excel documents we might save or any web page that we might post. A sub-set of this information is available via our public web page, but this internal portlet allows faculty to find student numbers that we'd never post to the web.
21
Students/CE This allows potential students and current students to select any state, the colleges in that state, then subjects, and eventually courses from that college. They will then see the courses at Curry that match the other college's. This is a growing database of courses that the Registrar's Office has, over the years, approved as equivalent courses. This helps the students to "know" which courses will be transferable. Naturally others may be as well, but at least they will know for sure that these are. The student essentially builds their own list, and can then output the list to an excel spreadsheet.
22
Students (Seniors only)
This portlet lets the students fill in the exact address that they wish to have their diploma mailed as well as the name exactly as they wish to have it appear on their diploma. It completely eliminates mistakes and eliminates all the data entry that we had when they submitted paper forms.
23
Students/CE This allows one to view classes, searching by instructor name, subject, course number, day of the week, time of the day, etc. and find matching classes. They select potential classes they may be interested in and build their wish list of courses for the next term. When they want to, they can print the data to a form that is helpful when they meet with their advisor and also when its time to do web registration.
24
Faculty This provides faculty with the ability select a term (default is the next term), then select a class from a pull down list of all their classes. A complete roster of students is display with thumbnail sized images of the students just above the names. This is very helpful at the start of term to help the faculty get to know the student names quickly. In many cases, they learn the names prior to the first class and surprise the students by knowing their names on the first day of class.
25
Students/CE/Grad A series of portlets allows students to complete assessments on-line for each course section that they have taken. A hold is placed on their account to prevent viewing of grades and removed instantly when their final assessment is submitted. Faculty have options to view assessments individually or in summary form and can download the data into Excel if they wish to do any analysis of the data.
