2. Chapter 40 Summary
Chapter 40 begins after the convict has gone to bed. In the fist few paragraphs Pip speculates what is going to be done with the convict. He later leaves his rooms, and stumbles on a man on the stair. Though Pip asks who the man is, he will not say so Pip goes to find the watch man, but when the two return the man is gone. The following morning Pip finds more out about his benefactor. Including that he has assumed the name of Provis , intends to stay in England, and had no knowledge of being followed the night before. On finding that Provis intends to stay Pip finds him a home and disguise.

3. Chapter 41 Summery
Pip and Provis explain the situation to Herbert. After Provis leaves they discuss their reactions. Ending with Pip pronouncing that he can not take any more money from Provis, and the boys agreement that Provis must be removed from the country and Pip would have to go with him.

6. Comparisons THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN GUILT AND INOCENCE
Pip still feels guilt about stealing from Joe and the fact that Provis has done all this for him because he did something wrong, this really chafes at him.
PRESERVING A CONSIENCE OVER SOCAL CLASS DEVELPOMENT
On a surface level this applies because Pip wants to reject Provis’s promised wealth. It would seem he does this because of his guilt for stealing from Joe, and receiving wealth for something he believes is wrong. The more the text is examined the more it seems he is rejecting the wealth because of his great fear of Provis.

“ Moving The lamp as the man moved, I made out that he was substantially dressed, but roughly, like a voyager by sea. That he had long iron gray hair. That his age was about sixty. That he was a muscular man, strong on his legs, and that he browned and hardened by exposure to the weather.”
