"When the doorbell rings at three in the morning, it's never good news
2
“A clammy rain misted down on the six hundred and eighty students assembled in ranks on the muddy front lawn of Cedarville Middle School.”
3
“There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife.”
4
“I am eleven years old, and I am invisible.”
5
What do these all have in common?
They are great first lines of books to HOOK the reader
6
You need a HOOK, LEAD or ATTENTION-GETTER for your Fictional Narrative to get the reader interested in your story
7
There are many ways to HOOK the reader into your story
There are many ways to HOOK the reader into your story. We will look at four different ways and you will eventually choose the one that works best for your narrative. Let’s look at a few…

DESCRIBE THE SETTING:. The airport was unbearably hot
DESCRIBE THE SETTING: The airport was unbearably hot. The ceiling fans were useless except as the source of an irritating series of hums and squeaks. The humid air was thick with large mosquitoes and flies. I swatted a fly away from my head only to realize that my recently straightened hair had already formed into a halo of tight curls.
9
DESCRIBE A CHARACTER: The ticket agent was sinister looking with dark, greasy hair, a large nose, and a tight mouth underneath a ridiculous handlebar mustache. I felt his beady eyes boring into me. As he opened his mouth, I glimpsed yellow, crooked teeth.

START WITH DIALOGUE. “I cannot believe this. What are we going to do
START WITH DIALOGUE “I cannot believe this. What are we going to do? No one wants to help us,” I shouted, distraught at the news I had just heard. “And no one seems to speak English,” Wendi added. Lara began to tremble and cry. In another moment, she would become hysterical. I knew this from experience.

JUMP INTO THE ACTION Rushing through the overcrowded airport, my large suitcase nearly mowed down a young toddler standing in my way. I did not care. I was desperate to find the American Airlines customer service desk.

Which type is this? Mr. Entwhistle was our substitute teacher. He had big shoulders and a mean mouth. He knew, before he’d laid eyes on us, that we were out to make trouble. And he knew how to handle teenagers. Step on them hard, right from the start, and you’d have no discipline problems…
13
Which type is this? I rummaged through my book bag. I emptied out everything but the cell phone was nowhere in sight. My heart was pounding so loudly that the people across the schoolyard could have heard it. “Bah-bum, bah-bum, bahbum…” couldn’t think about anything else but that cell phone.

Which type is this? “I’m bored!” shouted Jenna.
“Me, too,” we all groaned in unison. The sleepover was not turning out as I had expected. “Oh my god, I just got the best idea,” shrieked Arielle,“Let’s have a séance.”
15
Which type is this? It was a cold, damp day on the Fort Totten field. The grass was so soggy that as we stepped onto the field, our cleats sagged into the ground like we were walking through quicksand. My coach began to hit balls out to us.
