What is the functional group being investigated today?
2
Carboxylic acids To be able to recognise a carboxylic acids.
Learning Objectives: To be able to recognise a carboxylic acids. To investigate some reactions of carboxylic acids. To apply prior knowledge of acid reactions to predict products of carboxylic acid reactions. Keywords: Carboxylic acid, functional group Homework: Complete the worksheet “Acids for smoother skin”. An insight into the applications of carboxylic acids Due: Tues 9th Feb
3
Some carboxylic acids around us
H Ascorbic acid Ethanoic acid Oxalic acid Tartaric acid Citric acid Tannic acid
4
Some carboxylic acids around us
Ethanoic acid Oxalic acid Lactic acid Pentanoic acid
5
Activity – Carboxylic acids and their reactions
Complete Ac7.3 for either methanoic or ethanoic acid carboxylic acid. Draw the structure of your carboxylic acid. Write a general word equation for each reaction using your knowledge of how acids react. Use your book (p ) to help you write word equations for each reaction of your chosen carboxylic acid . Extension: Construct a balanced symbol equation for each reaction. O H Caution: When heating, do so VERY gently as it is likely to boil over. Always heat with the boiling tube at an angle AWAY from you and your peers.
6
Three key reactions of carboxylic acids
Metal + carboxylic acid Metal oxide + carboxylic acid Metal carbonate + carboxylic acid
7
True or false Ethanol is a carboxylic acid
The functional group of a carboxylic acid is COOH True Carboxylic acids react with metals to produce a salt and hydrogen True Carboxylic acids have a lower pH than acids such as HCl and H2SO4 False When ethanoic acid reacts with sodium oxide the products are sodium ethanoate and water True
8
Can you…? Recognise a carboxylic acid.
Predict the products of reactions between carboxylic acids and metals, metal oxides and metal carbonates. Write a word equation for each of the reactions investigated today. Traffic light each one with your colour cards.
