Let me show you how easy it is to measure using this system!
Metric System If you have been outside of the United States you have been exposed to the metric system. You may have noticed that in the United States that some products have the Metric System printed along side the English system. The United States will someday switch to the metric system and catch up to the rest of the countries. Let me show you how easy it is to measure using this system!
2
The metric system is based on the multiples of 10
Every country except the US uses the metric system (excluding US scientists) The metric system is based on the multiples of 10 1, 10, 100, 1000
4
Mass – Amount of matter in an object and depends on the number and kinds of atoms that make up the object Basic unit is the gram (g), but you can use the kilogram (kg), or the milligram (mg) tools= balance
5
Examples of mass
6
1 pound vs. 1 kg
7
Length, width, height – Used to find the dimensions of an object Tools – meter stick or metric ruler Basic unit of length is the meter (m), or centimeter (cm), or millimeter (mm) or decimeter (dm)
8
Examples of length
9
Amount of space occupied by an object is the objects volume
Solid objects volume measure in cm3 Liquid volumes measure in mL Tools - graduated cylinder, beaker or flask Basic unit of measurement of volume of a liquid is a liter (L), or milliliter (mL)
10
How to read a graduated cylinder
11
Temperature - Measure of the average vibrations of the particles that make up a material Measure in degrees Tools – thermometer Basic unit of temperature- Degree Celsius (ºC)
12
temperature
13
Which one is 25 ºC and which one is 25 ºF?
14
Time – Interval between events Tools – stop watch, timer or clock Basic units - (sec), (hr), (min)
15
Newtons – Used to find the amount of force Tools – spring scale Basic unit is the Newton (N)
