1 Section 3: Biology and the Environment
Preview Bellringer Key Ideas A Lost World Technology in Environmental Science Citizen Scientists Summary

2 Bellringer Write three or four sentences describing a global, national, or local environmental problem and any efforts that are being undertaken to correct the problem.

3 Key Ideas How does biological research help protect the environment?
How do new technologies help us study the environment? How do biologists rely on the contributions of community members to develop solutions for environmental problems?

4 A Lost World Ecology is the study of the interactions of living things with one another and with their environment. The study of the air, water, and land surrounding an organism or community is called environmental science.

5 A Lost World, continued Biological research helps us understand, value, and protect the environment. The environment provides natural resources such as water, food, and energy sources that are vital to human societies and to all organisms.

6 A Lost World, continued In February 2006, biologists found a previously untouched area of New Guinea. In just two weeks, they discovered 40 species. Areas such as the “lost world” in New Guinea need to be protected so that Earth’s resources can continue to meet the needs of humans and all organisms.

7 Visual Concept: Species

8 Technology in Environmental Science
Tools such as satellite tagging, geographic information systems, and genetics are used to study and protect the environment. Researchers use satellite tagging to track the movement of animals such as molas, polar bears, and sea turtles. The data provides insights into animal behavior and food webs and helps scientists plan conservation strategies.

9 Technology in Environmental Science, continued
Computer modeling systems, called geographic information systems (GIS), are used to compare data about molas and their environment. GIS also allows researchers to share data. DNA samples collected from endangered species may be studied even if the species becomes extinct. Someday, DNA samples may be used to clone extinct animals.

10 Citizen Scientists Individuals and communities help develop solutions for environmental problems. High school groups, such as Southwestern High School Conservation Club (SWCC) in Somerset, KY, help students understand the environment. You can begin an environmental club at your school. Ask a teacher and several classmates to consider local environmental issues and ways to study them.

11 Visual Concept: Conservation

12 Visual Concept: Recycling

13 Summary Biological research helps us understand, value, and protect the environment. We learn how to protect the environment by learning more about what affects it. Tools such as satellite tagging, geographic information systems, and genetics are used to study and protect the environment. Biologists rely on the contributions of individuals and communities to help develop solutions for environmental problems.
