Section 11-1 Explain the continental drift theory. What is Pangaea?
What other clues supported the continental drift theory?
2
The continental drift theory was proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912 which stated that all of the continents were once connected as one large landmass. It broke apart 200 million years ago and the continents moved horizontally to their current positions. Pangaea, which means “all land,” is what the large landmass was called by Wegener.
4
People did not believe Wegener’s theory, but there are additional clues to support it now.
Fossil clues found in both South America and Africa showed a reptile living on both continents.
5
Climate clues showed that fossils of warm-weather plants were found on islands in the Arctic Ocean and glacial deposits were found in South America.
6
Rock clues showed similar rock structures were found on different continents.
