INTRODUCTION: An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is that allows the wheels on a motor vehicle to continue interacting tractively with the road surface as directed by driver steering inputs while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up (that is, ceasing rotation) and therefore avoiding skidding
6
ABS is a safety system On motor vehicles which prevents the wheels from locking while braking. The ABS is designed to maintain vehicle control, directional stability and optimum deceleration Under severe braking conditions on most road surfaces. This prevents the wheels from locking up. The sensors -one at each wheel send a variable voltage signals to controls
7
History 1929 Anti-lock braking systems were first developed for aircraft, by Gabriel Voisin 1950 Dunlop's Maxaret introduced a system and still in use on some aircraft models 1960 A fully mechanical system used in theFerguson P99 racing car, the Jensen FF and the Ford Zodiac, but saw no further use; the system proved expensive and, in automobile use, somewhat unreliable

ABS Function Depends on
ELECTRONIC BRAKE FORCE DISTRIBUTION(EBD) ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL
11
ELECTRONIC BRAKE FORCE DISTRIBUTION(EBD)
Brake Force Limitation An automobile brake technology that automatically varies the amount of force applied to each of a vehicle's brakes. Based on road conditions, speed, loading. ESC compares the steering wheel angle to vehicle turning rate using a yaw rate sensor. "Yaw" is the vehicle's rotation around its vertical center of gravity (turning left or right).
12
ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL(ESC)
A computerized technology Reduce engine power until control is regained. Directional stability :During normal driving, ESC works in the background and continuously monitors steering and vehicle direction. ESC incorporates yaw rate control
13
The ESC system uses several sensors to determine what the driver wants (input). Other sensors indicate the actual state of the vehicle (response). The most important sensors are: Steering wheel angle sensor: Yaw rate sensor : Lateral acceleration sensor:. Wheel speed sensor :
14
OPERATION OF ANTI LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM:
Central electronic control unit Four wheel speed sensors. Steering wheel angle sensor, and a gyroscopic sensor. At least two hydraulic valves within the brake hydraulics. Constantly monitors the rotational speed of each wheel Impending wheel lock
15
Some ABS can apply or release braking pressure 16 times per second.
The number of voltage pulses per second that are induced in the pickup changes in direct proportion to wheelspeed. So as speed increases, the frequency and amplitude of the wheel speed sensor goes up Modern ABS applies individual brake pressure to all four wheels through a control system of hub-mounted sensors and a dedicated micro-controller
17
Components of ABS: There are four main components to an ABS:
1. Wheel speed sensors 2. Modulated Valves 3. Pump 4. Controller.

CONTROLLER ECU type unit
receives information from each individual wheel speed sensor limit EBD and activate the ABS modulator which actuates the braking valves on and off. Is a microprocessor. It uses input from its sensors to regulate hydraulic pressure during braking to prevent wheel lockup. Key inputs-wheel speed sensors and a brake pedal switch.

BRAKE TYPE: Four-channel, four-sensor ABS
Three-channel, four-sensor ABS Three-channel, three-sensor ABS One-channel, one-sensor ABS

CONCLUSION ABS WORKS BETTER THAN TRADITIONAL BRAKING SYSTEM(DRUM OR DISC). To have a smooth as well as safe journey. ABS plays a main role in stopping your vehicle smoothly. In your vehicle, an anti-lock braking system is a safety system which is used for braking, preventing the wheels from locking up (that is, ceasing rotation) and therefore avoiding skidding. Prevent the wheels from locking up while braking.
