Descriptive writing vocabulary
Scale of abstraction – measures how concrete or abstract words are, particularly descriptive words Abstract words- general words that provide little specific information or deal with intellectual, untouchable qualities and things Concrete words- specific words that appeal to the senses, describe physical things, provide factual data, or trigger emotional associations Dominant Impression – the overall feeling created by the sum of the details See page 53 of A&B for the scale of abstraction

Group activity- character descriptions
In your Kahoot groups Select 2 people that everyone in your group is familiar with. These can be your group members. Famous people, or people you all know. Write a 2-3 sentence description for each character that uses concrete words and creates a dominant impression. Note: focus on physical, concrete details and provide information that appeals to multiple senses.
