1 Examples of different types of connective tissues. A
Examples of different types of connective tissues. A. Loose connective tissue below the simple columnar epithelium (E) of the gallbladder. Bundles of smooth muscle (SM) run through the connective tissue. V, vein. B. Dense irregular connective tissue in the capsule of the spleen. Fibroblast nuclei (arrows) are visible among the thick bundles of collagen. An extension of the capsule penetrates down into the parenchyma of the spleen. C. Dense regular connective tissue of a tendon. The elongated fibroblast nuclei (arrows) in widely separated, regular rows show that the large type I collagen bundles are organized unidirectionally in this tissue. D. Unilocular (white fat) adipose tissue. A single lipid droplet (L) occupies the center of the adipocyte cells, leaving a rim of cytoplasm and the nucleus (arrow) at the periphery. Capillaries (*) are found between the adipocytes. E. Elastic fibers in the wall of the aorta. The section has been treated with Verhoeff stain, which renders elastin-containing elements black. The middle layer of the aorta contains a large amount of elastic fibers arranged in sheet-like structures, called laminae or membranes. Here, smooth muscle cells, not fibroblasts, are responsible for the synthesis and organization of elastic fibers.
