Take a look at what we have done to improve our school ethos!
Behaviour Stars! Take a look at what we have done to improve our school ethos!
2
Background: Staff were concerned that the school needed a new behaviour system that all staff could use to reward pupils for good behaviour and good manners. Staff especially thought lunch times were a time where behaviour could be improved. Both staff and pupils wanted a happier environment. Staff filled in a questionnaire at the end of Summer 2013 about children’s manners and behaviour. This questionnaire was then filled in again at the end of Summer 2014, after we had had the new behaviour reward system in place for one year. After the behaviour system had been in place for one year, staff had an improved view of children’s behaviour and manners by 12.5%. This showed that behaviour has improved since the implementation of ‘Behaviour Stars’ and therefore improved our school ethos.

What we did: The issues discussed by staff were raised at school council meetings. Staff and pupils, in conjunction, decided on the new behaviour system. All pupils were briefed on this and there was a competition to come up with the name for it. ‘Behaviour Stars’ was chosen. Here are some comments from pupils, explaining what Behaviour Stars are: “it’s like a reward for doing something good…good behaviour.” “[A reward for] being polite, good work, helping people, caring for people.” Why we did it: Staff and pupils wanted to improve behaviour, especially at lunch times, and therefore improve our school ethos. Here are some comments from pupils explaining why we did it: “So that people started being better behaved.” “So that school is a nicer place.”

How school is better and when: Here are some comments from pupils, explaining how our school is better and when: “Not as much arguing.” “People help each other more.” ”Concentrating on work more.” “Thinking about their own actions and other people.” “They get options for getting prizes if they are good whereas they get in trouble if they’re not and that’s not good.” “Its good being part of a team because you are working together. I like that staff are in teams because it encourages you.”
