Picture “Deification of war”, Vereshchagin Vasily Vasilyevich, 1871
This cloth can be considered as the brightest and expressive exposer of horrors of war. On legends, behind Timur's troops there were heaps of corpses and the skulls put in a pyramid. Those days the barbarous tradition has remained — east governors considered the chopped-off parts of a body of enemies as military trophies. The artist has apprehended this habit as a symbol. The picture, unique on the expressive force, which hasn't lost the relevance nowadays.

Picture "Pan", Mikhail Vrubel, 1899
Among pictures of "a fantastic cycle" researchers prefer this one. We can see a mythical saver of natural wealth, the pagan goat-hoofed pan. On the background of a picture we see the Russian landscape with birches, the moon and the small river. The lit with moonlight goat-hoofed hero is more similar to the Russian fantastic wood goblin. The viewer accurately sees only a "human" shape of the hero. Outlines of the animal beginning are lost in a shadow. The viewer has a feeling that he is present at the time of wonderful appearance of the hero before death. His sight is light, shrill and unusually kind. It is possible to see a smile in dense of his moustaches.

Picture “Irodiada”, Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy, 1886
The plot of a picture was taken from the known history from the New Testament. Irodiada, Herod's daughter, has given the order to bring her John the Baptist's head. The rage on Ioann was because he sharply condemned her marriage with the native uncle. Irodiada decided to revenge. And here, before the heroine, is the Baptist's head on a dish. The woman looks at the terrifying "trophy" with a great celebration.

"After rain", Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi, 1879
On this picture we can see the small farm on the high hill is elegant and cozy. Contrasts of work create the atmosphere of the ease which has come after a rain and aroma. The silence and rest of the lit part of work are opposed to violence of elements in heaven. The difficult movement of clouds, intense and strong, doesn't frighten the viewer any more. His eyes are attracted to solarly bright part of a landscape. The picture is painted from nature.

Picture “Pearl”, Mikhail Vrubel, 1904
The idea of this work has appeared thanks to Voloshin’s gift. The poet has presented to the master a huge sea shell covered with a thick natural layer of pearl. This changeable and poured material became an inspiration source. In a small picture it is possible to see both the sea, and the night sky, and the mysterious attracting infinity. At first sight casual spots turn into the fantastic beings soaring over storming waves. Two female figures are as antique goddesses.
